Some of the Classes Offered at AGMC

These classes will be offered at various times throughout the year. There will be an announcement email to all members when each one is first scheduled. After this announcement the class will be open for AGMC Members to sign-up. To sign-up for a class members need to go to “Upcoming Classes” section of this website, log in with the member password, locate and click on the class on the calendar and follow the prompts to sign-up for that class.


Introduction to silversmithing

This is an introduction to Silversmithing and the tools used in many of the other classes offered at AGMC The Series consists of 10 classes with a focus on foundational Silversmithing skills, including, Design, Sawing and Piercing, Filing, Soldering, Texturing, Patinas, Finishing, equipment usage and Classroom Safety. It is geared for the novice or those with limited experience. At the end of the series you will be prepared to continue your journey into Silversmithing. This Introduction series is a prerequisite for many of the other classes offered at AGMC. We promote a relaxed, easy going and fun atmosphere for some serious learning. There is a high student to instructor ratio which means you’ll have plenty of support.


Bead/ Open Lab - Friday

This lab is available for students wishing to work on any project NOT requiring the use of club equipment and materials. NO LAPIDARY OR SILVERSMITHING!


Cabbing Class

This is the beginning Cabbing class through which participants will learn the basics of cutting, forming, and polishing a simple cabochon. This is for members that want to begin their journey into cabbing and for those that may need to refresh their cabbing knowledge. For mew members. This three hour class is required before any member can use the AGMC Lapidary equipment so you know how the club safety rules work.

This class will teach you to make three types of rings. It is designed for people with a moderate level of Silversmithing experience.


Advanced Cabbing class

The class will begin with cutting a 30x40 agate to competition standard, followed by a sugarloaf cut, a tigereye, and a heart, cross or star shape. Stones will be available for purchase or students may bring their own.


Casting Lab

Description: These two sessions involve investing spruced trees in preparation for the burnout process and then (on Sunday) melting and pouring into the remaining cavity to produce the cast pieces. Finishing of the cast pieces is minimal and participants are encouraged to attend the Silversmithing Lab if they wish help in this last stage.


Cold mold class

Description: Students will learn how to set up, mix, pour, cut open, and wax inject a rubber mold made from cold molding compound. Students will leave the class with one complete mold and a wax pulled from that mold.


Enamel Lab

Description: This workshop will allow experienced enamelists to try out new techniques, finish works in progress, ask questions and work with other enthusiasts.


Glass Lab

Description: This lab is available for students wishing to work on their glass pieces.


Lapidary Lab

Description: This lapidary lab is open for members who have successfully completed a cabbing class at AGMC to use the equipment under the monitoring of a lapidary supervisor.


Locket Class

Description: Make a hinged locket to display your special photo or anything that will fit flat in a 1.5” x 1.25” space. Students will Saw, Solder, Finish, Patina and use Micro Bolts to make this project.

Playing with fire

Description: This workshop is for experienced enamelists. The focus is on torch firing and raking enamels. There will be some instruction provided, but the bulk of the class is going to focus on experimentation and fun! Students will need to be able to work from verbal instruction.


Polishing and Finishing Class

Description: Students will learn to determine and execute a finish design for jewelry, including knowing the sequence of materials tousling the polishing and finishing process


Silver smithing Lab

Description: This lab is for the purpose of enabling qualified members of the club to avail themselves of the Silversmithing equipment and expertise of the supervisor(s).


Wax Working Lab

Description: This session consists of working on creating or refining wax models and sprucing them in preparation for the investment process. Participation on this session requires simultaneous registration in the Casting Lab for investment and pour processes.


Wire Weaving Lab

Description: This wire weaving lab is open for members who would like to work on their wire weaving projects with some assistance from the supervisor. It is NOT a class with formal instruction.


Special Stone Settings/Shapes 9 Week Series

Description: This is a nine (9) week course Special Settings/Shapes Class. In the past this class was offered as part of the intermediate silversmithing program. In this class series you will learn tips and tricks to successfully set square, triangle, tear drop and round shaped stones. You will learn how to make your own bezel wire from fine silver sheet. You will learn how to make a step bezel and how to make a tube setting. Be prepared to learn special tone settings.
